I note that DEC has posted on the NYS Register an extended deer season in the southern zone for bow and muzzleloaders from DEC.26 through January 1. Let me go on record as being opposed to this. The southern zone regular season is too long as it is. Many landowners deny access to trappers during deer season and many trappers pull their traps to avoid conflicts when the season is open. If DEC wants this season open why is it not open to regular gun hunters? In my opinion DEC had a dismal record of failure for whitetail management in the southern zone. One year doe permits are hard to get, the next year they are handed out like candy. Landowner kill permits have been greatly abused. I know that I will get static, but I feel that bow hunters are given far too many advantages over gun hunters, especially with the coming of age of the cross bows. Just my two cents.

I agree 100%, AL.
Blame it on the NEW YORK BOWHUNTERS Group, and their Henchmen from the antler worship group; Quality Deer Management Association.
They are the lobbying muscle behind deer hunters taking over the woods & fields of New York State, to the detriment of all the other sportsmen consumptive user groups.
Looks like another case were the DEC is bound and determined to do as they damn well please.
Sad, and disgusting.

First off, the proposal was shot down for this year due to large opposition, lead by the snowmobilers associations. Landowners don't want sleds on their property when deer season is open. So the 'bilers came out in droves to oppose. Trappers also opposed as did small game hunters.
Nothing to do with NYB or QDM, this was purely a DEC proposal to offer "further opportunity"..i.e. more money in license sales..

Sorry, but I believe that the proposal was adopted. If you read the language in the Feb.17 NYS Register it states that the measure will be reviewed in 2024, the third year after being adopted. I could be wrong.

You can bet those groups lobbied for this proposal, or at the very least supported it. This sort of hair-brained scheme is right up their alley. walleyed

I hunt deer mostly for meat anymore. also unable to draw and hold my bow. Do still trap fox skunk and coyotes locally. My complaint about this extended season is that I have plenty of permissions on local farms for trapping but not until AFTER DEER SEASON I understand the various reasons for landowners give for this as one actually allow me to hunt also. By the time I start trapping here it is almost late for fox/coyote fur value. this extra week just adds to my delay. Also bow season starting in October eliminates most of my coon trapping in fall conditions. We already have nearly 3 months of deer hunting. Just dont think we need any extension of it. just my opinion thanks

Deer season is waaaaaaayyyy to long already. If these bragger, blowhard, boasting rack hunters that parade their deer on Facebook with the rack pushed toward the lens haven't gotten a deer by then piss on em'. I shoot all my deer every year and think the season is twice as long as it should be. Shot every size buck spike to 13 point and all size yearlings and does. I'm a meat hunter! Point regulations and extended seasons....really?!?! Learn how to hunt and make the best out of your opportunities. Can't trap 80% of my permission while deer season is on because city people have leased all the land. On state land your catch is almost always shot or stolen when deer season is on. End of Rant......Dale
